Racism and Me

Take a look, I’m white, I’m English, I used to be proud to be an Englishman. That part of me is dying, fast. Why. We are no longer a proud race. We spend our time apologising to anyone and everyone for past deeds. Our empire. Our slave trade. Even our Church. We hang our heads in shame, (don’t include me here). In short, we are a timid, watered down race. I no longer have a country to really call my own.

So. I’m a white man. Accident of birth. I had no more choice than a guy born black, yellow, brown or any other colour.

I was born in England. Same freedom of choice as with my colour.

The British Empire. Be it a good or bad thing. Quite a few of my kin died protecting it, but I don’t think any made fortunes from it.

The Slave Trade. This had gone on for centuries before Britain had an Empire. None of my family, to the best of my knowledge, have ever bought or owned a slave. I am told that the Roman Empire had a few tucked away, even had some of us white Brits among them. So just don’t expect any apologies from me.

The Church of England. Sorry, not a goer, but get (I’m struggling here for a polite word) annoyed by the latitude given to other religions in MY country.

It seems pretty simple to me, those coming to our shores should expect to conform to our laws and culture. When in Rome, etc. As for the race card, whipped out like the soccer referee’s Red Card, should I raise my voice to any foreigner, choose a colour, then I say this, grow up and face facts. You will at times be discriminated against. I have and will continue to be and sometimes because of my colour / race / religion.

Everyone but the English is shouting about his or her rights. I make no bones here, I consider myself at the front of the queue when English Rights are on order, but don’t go criticizing other countries when visiting.

Call me a racist, if you will. You might find some Black and Brown guys that would argue this.

In extreme confidence

One day, maybe, the world will be a better place and all people look and feel, the same. This will not be in my lifetime, I'm afraid. Perhaps I'm just a silly old fart, trying to live a reasonably decent life and coping with a set of conditioned reflexes.
